I was in pretty bad shape when I arrived at <a style=\"color: #0c40b7;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyhumane.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kentucky Humane Society<\/a> (KHS) from a county shelter. I was part of KHS\u2019s \u201cSaving Kentucky\u2019s Shelter Dogs Project 2.0\u201d program, which was working to help dogs like me that might have been euthanized without extra support.<\/p>\n<p>For me, the problem was trust issues. I\u2019d had a really rough life, and I had pretty much shut down. I didn\u2019t trust anyone, and I avoided everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, the staff knew that they could win me over. They enrolled me in their behavior modification program at the <a style=\"color: #0c40b7;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyhumane.org\/component\/k2\/item\/185-swope-pet-retreat-opens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Swope Pet Retreat<\/a>, and started working to build my confidence.<\/p>\n<p>They got me to trust people again by teaching me a fun, new game called \u201cgo say hi.\u201d I would touch my nose to a stranger\u2019s palm and then go back to my handler for a food reward. Over time, I learned I could control my interactions with strangers. After graduating from the behavior modification program, I went to a foster home and then \u2026 best news ever\u2026 I was adopted! And I\u2019m not the only one.
