Overview of the Issue: During the Dogs & Data Webinar on June 21 hosted by Pedigree Foundation and Shelter Animals Count, we explored how the decline in animal outcomes – including animal transports – is contributing to overcrowding in shelters.
- Since 2019, the number of cats being transferred to shelters has gone up by 16%, but dog transfers have fallen by 14%.
- Dogs that are transferred now stay longer in shelters than other dog intake types (like owner surrender and stray), with the median stay for transferred in dogs increasing from 9 to 13 days.
- Among the organizations with complete 2019-2023 data, eight of the top ten shelters that accepted the most transferred animals have decreased the number of animals they accept.
Insights from Experts: Leaders from various organizations, including the ASPCA, MSPCA, Operation Kindness, Austin Pets Alive, and Brandywine Valley SPCA, discussed current challenges with animal transport. They emphasized the importance of removing obstacles to successful adoptions, enhancing communication between shelters, and establishing robust transport partnerships. Adam Lamb from Brandywine Valley SPCA highlighted a simple yet impactful idea: if shelters could dedicate just five kennels for receiving transported animals, this collective action could help close the gap between 2019 and 2023 numbers and reduce overall crowding in animal shelters.
